MHC Protects Your Privacy and Security
Your privacy and the security of your health information are priorities for MHC. We comply with all state and federal health privacy laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Each doctor and health care organization that participates with MHC is responsible for following all privacy laws when sharing your health records with the network. Only authorized health care providers, organizations and professionals involved in your treatment, coordination of care, quality improvement and activities related to the management or payment of your health care. Medical record information is protected under federal and stateprivacy laws; access, use and disclosure of medical records will comply with those laws.
While the network makes accessing your health information easier for your doctors, it provides much more privacy and security than traditional paper records. Here are some of the advantages:
- Your health information is shared over a secure electronic network. Only your doctors and caregivers who are treating you will be able to access it.
- MHC maintains records of the authorized doctors and caregivers who view your information. You may request a report of who has seen it from your provider.
- Authorized providers need a secure password to use the network. MHC is able to audit and track all access and changes to your health information.
- The secure network keeps your records safer than faxing or mailing. Your records won’t be sent to the wrong place, get lost or set on a fax machine where others can see them.
